Yes, you can, storing tulips in the refrigerator helps keep them beautifully fresh and bright! Storing tulips in the fridge is a good option if you want to enjoy tulips in a vase for longer. This is because the cold temperature slows down the tulips’ natural aging process, allowing them to last longer in a vase. The tulip water also stays cool longer, which is beneficial for the tulips.
How to store tulips?
You can store tulips in a cold place, like a basement or refrigerator. Tulips usually last only about a week. According to many florists, storing tulips in the refrigerator can extend their life span up to two weeks.
At room temperature or during summer months, tulips can wilt quickly in a vase. Utilizing the fridge can be a good solution then, as storing tulips in the refrigerator can help extend their vase life. Tulips are easy to put in the fridge especially overnight and take out again the next day. It is important to remember not to place the tulip vase near vegetables and fruits in the refrigerator, as they release ethylene gas, which can accelerate the wilting of tulips. Also, if there are foods with a strong smell in the fridge, it might not be advisable to store tulips there, to prevent them from absorbing those smells. You can read more care tips for tulips here!
My experiences
I bought a new refrigerator just in time for tulip season, and now for the first time I have space to store a bouquet of tulips in the fridge. So, I always move the tulip vase to the fridge overnight and while I’m at work, and take it out in the evening and morning. I’ve been testing this trick through the winter and spring. The first pink Valentine’s Day bouquet stayed fresh and beautiful for about 2-2.5 weeks. I cut a new absorption surface for the tulips a few times and changed the water almost every day. The flowers were also very fresh when I bought them, as they come from a nearby town. One flower broke, which I moved to a separate kenzan container, which accidentally stayed in the fridge for a longer time because I didn’t feel like taking it out. That tulip has still been beautiful in the fridge for the third week ☺️
Right now, I have white and purple tulips, as well as double tulips. Let’s see how long these tulips last for me ☺️
