Bloemenmarkt – Amsterdam’s Floating Flower Market

We wanted to see the flowers and tulips of the Netherlands in the spring of 2020, but instead, our trip took place in December 2022. Instead, we got to enjoy Amsterdam’s Christmas atmosphere. The Netherlands and Amsterdam are famous for their tulips, and of course, we wanted to see Amsterdam’s tulips as well. So, on our second day, we headed straight to Amsterdam’s flower market, Bloemenmarkt.

Bloemenmarkt Amsterdam

Bloemenmarkt is Amsterdam’s flower market and has existed since 1862. But it’s not just any flower market – it floats on the water along Amsterdam’s Singel canal, between Muntplein and Koningsplein. Bloemenmarkt is also the world’s only floating flower market. Here, you can find shops selling flowers, souvenirs, and gifts, and along the market, there are also many cheese shops. Unfortunately, December wasn’t quite tulip season, but we still found a few stores selling tulips. There were also plenty of tulip bulbs, various dried flowers, as well as festive flowers and arrangements.

This time, we didn’t buy anything, but we plan to return here and to the Netherlands sometime in the spring for a proper tulip trip. Check out the video below to get a feel for the market! 🌷
